Years ago, recognizing my tendencies towards over-seriousness, I wrote a reminder to myself: lighten up, loosen up, and laugh a lot. It didn't help.

When people talking about their celestial origins asked where I'm from, I'd say optimistically, 'I used to be from Sirius, but now I'm from Playful.' I seriously wanted it to be true.

My muscles are still tensed, mostly from 'over-seriousness' and 'over-thinking' — traits of Asperger's. One of the keys to go where I deeply long to go as a spiritual explorer is simply to relax, and that's been the hardest for me to do.

I've applied numerous practices such as acupuncture, biofeedback, and massage. None has made a lasting difference.

Well, now I'm exploring 'right-brain' activities of playing and Ocarina and contemplation with the Frax App. Just started and nothing to report about them as an aid to relaxation, but can say that they've been fun, and that's got to be good.

Over the years, I've played casually with various musical instruments: didgeridoo, Native American flute, hand drums, ukulele .... and there was some joy in them. But with intensive traveling between continents, none were portable enough. Around 2008, while doing clay work, I learned to make ocarinas, and later bought a few models. It seemed either the instruments or I had limitations which discouraged continuation.

Ocarinas on the market have come a long way, and just yesterday a new 12-note model arrived. It is beautiful to behold with the eyes and to be held in the hands. I love the clear notes and (for a non-musician) the relative ease of finding them. When I'm further along, may add to this post.

Below the first two songs I am learning on ocarina, are some YouTubes by Ocarina enthusiast David Erick Ramos. Though my journey has taken me through and past religious beliefs, and then aversion towards religion, now I am growing more neutral and graceful towards all journeys. So my growing collection includes Christian hymns as well as other genres.

The songs are not the most playful, but they're great for learning the ocarina... and I love the feeling of making progress. For readers interested in learning ocarina, there are tabs I have created, or more accurately, lyrics with corresponding notes, which although uncommon, is my preferred way of playing. It is a middle way, for those who have no real need to read music 🎼 on a staff, but still like to learn the notes of the fingering positions.
